This letter from the bishop in Mogadishu outlines their problems just before the current fighting started.

  Dear Mrs. McGowan,

Included in this letter you will find a receipt of the 8.000 USD that Mission Scotland has sent in favor of the Diocese of Mogadishu for its activities to children in need.

I thank you and assure you of our prayer for all the benefactors who have contributed to this sum. We are using this amount of money for the program of Caritas Somalia in Southern Somalia: in Baidoa in fact we have opened last May a dispensary in favor of the poor of that region.

The dispensary of Caritas Somalia is a very simple and humble structure. Therefore we cannot treat more serious cases, particularly regarding children. That is why we send these children to the pediatric hospital of the SOS Children's Village in Mogadishu, where some of our Consolata Missionary sisters have been working for years. We spend the money you have sent us for the transport of sick children from Baidoa to Mogadishu (around 260 Km) and for the first needs once they are in Mogadishu.

We must admit that the political situation in Southern Somalia is very tense and that there is the risk of an all out war. In September one of our sisters in Mogadishu has been killed. As a consequence the other four sisters are temporary out of the country. We hope they will be able to go back. In the meanwhile our dispensary in Baidoa continues its activities and sends children particularly in need to Mogadishu.

It is a very sad situation for most of the people in Somalia and for us also as a Church. In a very difficult surrounding people try to survive and the Chui\!i tries its best to help people in need, in this case, particularly the children.

Please tell me if you want more informations regarding our dispensary in Baidoa. We will be glad to send some reports and also some photos.

I wish you a joyful season of Christmas and a happy new year.
